General comment about the game
Bottom placed Wimbledon welcomes eight placed Ipswich
to a Saturday clash in English division one. Ipswich’s season so far isn’t
really what they expected. After a terrible start they managed to win eight
games out of nine in the mid autumn. Since then things have been more up and
down and in order to reach a playoff position they really have to keep up the
good play from the last two games. After two losses on the road against strong
home teams Norwich and Stoke they lost at home to Millwall, another team in
very good form. So after those heavier rounds it was a relief for Ipswich to
get back to winning ways with two clear wins over Walsall and Watford, with 3-1
and 4-1 respectively. The last game against Watford was played at home and
Ipswich started in a good manner and took the lead quite early after a terrible
mistake by the Watford keeper. Already after 24 minutes Ipswich doubled the
lead but Watford came back to 2-1 at half time. In the other half Ipswich made
two more goals. The first was most because of bad communication in the Watford
defence, and the last goal was a magnificent shot from outside the penalty
area. Interesting to mention is that the young forward duo Darren Bent and Dean
Bowditch has made one hattrick each in the two last games. In Ipswich there are
three players who will definitely miss the game. These are, forward Pablo
Counago (18(11) apps 11 goals) and defender Richard Naylor (28(7) 5 goals) who
are injured; and also the suspended defender Drissa Diallo (14(2) apps).
Once again we go against the struggling Wimbledon. As
we wrote in midweek, Wimbledon is not good enough for this division. And of
course Millwall managed to grab the three points in the Wednesday game, after a
goal in the first half. What Wimbledon really misses is somebody who has the
ability to score; their coach says that they have a lack of fire power, and
with only one goal scored in the last ten games he has a point there. But with
all those sell outs, as the club has made it is hard to keep up with any
standard in the play. To this game things look very much the same as ahead of
the Millwall game and so veteran striker Dean Holdsworth (26 apps, 3 goals) and
midfielder Wade Small (18 apps, 1 goal) will be unavailable again, together
with midfielder Alex Tapp (14 apps, 1 goal) who has not played since January.
Also out is defender Dean Lewington (18 apps, 1 goal) who is still suspended.
This is a game that we think that Ipswich will win. In the last games they have showed a very good goal scoring ability and then they should be able to kill off Wimbledon quite easy. We stake medium stake here, 3%.
