Final reasons

Looking at the ten last rounds in the Eircom League Drogheda is the top team and apart of the last game at home against revitalised Bohemians, they have played very good lately. Dublin City has been the worst team during the same period and with the major injury crisis they are up against today it is very difficult to see them overcome a stable Drogheda. Since Drogheda lost last game we go safer and propose an Asian Handicap here with the stake refunded in case of a draw. We put 3% on this bet.

General comment about the game

Friday evening means Eircom League action on Ireland. Our attention tonight is drawn to the game between Dublin City and Drogheda. Drogheda has been very good lately with three straight away victories in a row. Having played one game less than many of the other top teams they will actually be on the second position in the league if they win this match. Drogheda builds their play on a very good defensive work that have seem them let in goals in only three of the last eleven games. Being very stable in defensively has given them a confidence when going forward. Last round Drogheda played at home to Bohemians, a team that finally seems to have found their play. Bohemians is together with Shelbourne the two big teams on Ireland and loosing to those teams is always the expected outcome for the other teams. When Drogheda was up against Bohemians the latest good displays indicated that maybe they would be able to give Bohemians a fight. But this was totally wrong. Bohemians were very strong and controlled the midfield very well and consequently they could win quite easy with 3-0. Although loosing, the coach in Drogheda is positive ahead of the Friday clash since his team has made very good progress so far this season. Also they have no players suspended and the squad is almost fully fit. The only absentee is midfielder Barry Molloy, but since he has not played so much this year, Drogheda will be able to field the same squad as in many other games this year.

Dublin City is the bottom side in the league this year and most things point as if they will be relegated after the season. With only nine points taken from 15 rounds it is hard to see how they will manage to get their things going. However, they have some remarkable results. They have beaten both Waterford and title chasers Bohemians at home. Last round Dublin played away to fellow relegation fighters Derry City. After a promising start Dublin were hit by a doubtful penalty already in the fifth minute. Derry’s Michael Holt made no mistake and the goal really put Dublin in a difficult situation. Derry then made a second goal in the first half and when Dublin’s defender Ben Wheelan (who is suspended tonight against Drogheda) was sent off in the beginning of second half it looked as if the game was over. However the guests started to play the ball quite well and also managed to score their first goal. After the goal Dublin kept on chasing an equaliser, but Derry was able to hold the lead without any major problems. Dublin has big problems with injuries today. Six of the squad’s eight defenders are definitely ruled out with injuries or suspension. The only fully fit defender is the 20 year old Pierre Ennis, who came on as a substitute against Derry. Fellow defender Wes Byrne is to make a late fitness test in order to see if he can attend but it is very unlikely. This means real problems for Dublin and it is difficult to see how they should be able to put together a winning line up today.
